Diabetes  is not a simple disease. It affects various bodily functions or rather every cell of the body. In diabetics, there are number of metabolic aberrations which vastly hasten the natural degenerative process of the body. If untreated ----- Diabetes can lead to nerve damage, kidney & heart disease & blindness.

WHO has predicted that the new millennium population may see an epidemic of Diabetes. The biggest triggers for this dreaded disease are the food habits causing obesity & the increased stress in the society.

Obesity reduces the sensitivity of tissues to the action of insulin in the utilization of glucose. When fats are broken down for energy, the level of fatty acids in the blood increases resistance to insulin through their action on the liver &muscles. That is why if you are overweight, losing weight could help prevent or at least reduce your need for diabetes medication. Weight loss in an overweight person also leads to a marked improved metabolic functions & reduction in hyperglycemia.

During Stress some hormone are released which may block the effect of insulin on the cells. The adrenal gland produces many steroid hormones that regulate our blood sugar & fluid balance & when we are stressed, more adrenaline starts pouring into our blood stream which decreases the efficiency of insulin thus causing a rise in blood glucose level.

Can  Diabetes  be  managed   ?

Yes, Diabetes can be very well  managed with ----

  • diet control,

  • lifestyle changes

  • suitable medication

DIET

Diet is of primary importance. A low calorie, low fat alkaline diet is the only diet a diabetic should indulge, whatever be the extent of his malaise. Sprouts, fruits, nuts, vegetables and whole grain cereals should be taken in measured quantities. Milk and dairy products, cooked starchy foods, refined foods, flesh food and fried foods are to be scrupulously avoided. The reason all meats and flesh foods should be avoided in particular is that they reduce sugar tolerance by staying in the digestive system in a toxaemic state for a longer duration.

Smoking and alcohol  brings more complications for diabetics as such should be abandoned totally.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Another most important element in a Diabetic management  program after diet and medication is regular exercise. Much has been written about the beneficial effects of working out, but most people don’t seem to have the precious fifteen minutes a day to increase their lifespan by fifteen years.

During exercise, major metabolic, hormonal and cardiovascular adjustments are required to increase the supply of oxygen to the skeletal muscles and to supply adequate levels of fuel to the vital organs. Muscle glycogen, blood glucose and free fatty acids are the chief sources of energy. During the initial phase, the glycogen within the muscles is the primary source of food for the contracting muscle. After 5-10 minutes, blood glucose and free fatty acids provide energy.

After exercise, the exercise-induced fall in glycogen content   induces stimulation of glycogen resynthesis in the liver and  leads  prolonged increase of glucose uptake from the blood. Replenishment of muscle and liver glycogen stores takes 24 to 48 hours. During this time there is improvement in glucose tolerance and diminished insulin requirements. These are the immediate benefits of exercise. Long term benefits include improved cellular sensitivity to insulin by increasing the number of receptor sites in proportion. Regular light exercise not only burns off excess sugar, but also helps keep your weight to the optimum level. Exercise for Diabetics should be light and proportional to their fitness conditioning.
