The chemical study of seeds revealed that they contain Amino Acids; Crude protein , calcium, essential amino acids, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, pottasium, selenium, zinc etc. Vitamin present are carotene (96mg); thiamine (0.34mg); riboflavin (0.29 mg) and nicotinic acid (1.1mg) per 100 gms. The seeds also contain alkaloid trigonelline and choline, essential oil and saponin. Trigonelline has highly toxic action on neuromuscular preparations.
Research studies have shown that fenugreek powder have also antidiabetic & hypocholesterolaemic properties. Its major amino acids, 4-hydroxyisoleucine, stimulates insulin secretion from perfused pancreas. Balsamodendron Mukul has been mentioned in the Atharvaveda and also in Charaka, Susruta and other Samhitas and nighantus of Ayurveda. Sushruta has described the etio-pathogensis of obesity (Sthaulya) and the treatment with gum guggulu in his Samhita. In the literature of the ancient system of medicine, it is mentioned that the drug may be successfully used for the reduction of the body bulk and for treating other lipid disorders.
Guggulu is used as astringent, antiseptic, expectorant, aphrodisiac, demulcent, carminative, anti-spasmodic, emmenagogue and used in rheumatism. The solution of gum is used as gargle for a spongy gums, chronic tonsilitis and caries teeth. It stimulates the immune system and gastric secretions.
It also reduces level of cholesterol and obesity. Oleo-gum resin of Guggulu has been proved to be a potent hypocholesterolemic, hypo-lipidaemic, antiatherosclerotic agent both in clinical as well as in experimental studies..It is usually mixed with other herbs to enhance & guide them to a specific action.
